Sarracenia ‘Majin Bu’

NEW CULTIVAR

Sarracenia ‘Majin Bu’
Submitted: 29 August 2024
Sarracenia ‘Majin Bu’ is a Sarracenia moorei hybrid obtained from the cross between
S. leucophylla “Burgundy” × (S. × moorei ‘Leah Wilkerson’ × S. × moorei ‘Adrian Slack’), clone A by
Miroslav Srba. Among the various seedlings produced from this cross, Sarracenia ‘Majin Bu’ stood
out for its color, which is different from its siblings. From late spring, the pitchers exhibit a pink
color with darker veins, which can deepen to a dark pink as the season progresses (Figs. 2A & B).
The lid, initially whitish with pink veins, tends to become almost entirely pink-veined. The pitchers
also feature a darker spot on their throat. Unlike Sarracenia ‘Alicia’ and S. ‘Bled Velvet’, Sarracenia
‘Majin Bu’ has an oval peristome with a tip slightly curved downward and a larger, forward-tilting
lid. The shape of the pitcher flares more towards the top, with a wide neck that is slightly tilted
forward. The lid’s appendage, always pink in color, can reach up to 5 cm in length. Under my growing conditions in Tuscany, central Italy, as an adult, it can develop a pitcher up to 9 cm wide and an
average of 70 cm tall. The pitchers are very durable even during the winter and sometimes last into
the new year without drying out. Its flowers have yellow slightly waved petals (Fig. 2C). Given the
genes of the parent plants, this Sarracenia is an excellent starting point for creating new hybrids.
To preserve its characteristics, it must be propagated vegetatively. The Sarracenia ‘Majin Bu’ is
named after the large pink fictional character and the final antagonist of the manga series Dragon
Ball created by Akira Toriyama.
